Movie Review: Iron Sky

(There will be spoilers– be warned)

I was dying to see this movie in the theater last year.   I even worked with the promotion company in an attempt to bring Iron Sky to my home town.  This didn’t work out.  I was overjoyed when I recently discovered it on Netflix.

Plot:

At the end of World War II, a group of Nazis escaped to the dark side of the moon.  They developed a colony and began a new life. In 2018, astronauts discover the colony.  Astronaut James Washington, who is an African American, is captured by Nazis.  They discover Washington’s smartphone and this revolutionizes their computer system and will enable their attack on the Earth.

The President is a Sarah Palin like character.  Her popularity ratings are low. She needs something to give her a boost in the polls.

Eventually, the invasion begins with Nazi flying saucers and Space Zeppelins. They find the Earth is not as vulnerable as they had expected. Most of the nations of the Earth have hidden Space Warships of their own including America’s U.S.S. George W. Bush.

What I liked:
This is a fun tongue in cheek movie.  There are a few laugh out loud moments but most of the movie humorous.  I love the fact the President is a Sarah Palin like character.

I delight in movies with Nazi bad guys. Nazis make great bad guys from Indiana Jones to The Blues Brothers. Mixing in the fact that the Nazis live on the in Dark side of the Moon, and it is a super KOOL movie. There have been legends for years of Nazis escaping to the Moon at the end of World War II.

The battle scenes are fun. I love the flying saucers and the zeppelins of the Nazis. The warships of the Earth Countries are tons of fun. I love the line, “Okay who didn’t arm their spaceship? [Finland’s representative slowly raises his hand] “

This movie shows the corruption of politics on Earth and on the moon. Even though the Nazis are very different, they still use corruption and lies to promote their political power. The more they are different, the more they are the same. This is demonstrated not only by the portrayal of the U.S.A. but also the politics of the rest of the world.

What I not Like:
There are parts of movie that are pretty hokey. At times, the plot is paper thin and only used to move you along to action.

Review:
This was a fun movie. It will not win any Oscars for acting or even for special effects.  It was a completely fun geekfest movie.

This movie completely plays into stereotypes in society. There is no political correctness in this movie. It does it in a way that offends everyone. As long as you don’t easily get offended and realize this movie was done this way on purpose, then it should be fine.

This is an R rated movie. It does have some inappropriate contents for kids. There is strong language and some blood and sexual references.

My Grade: B
