Movie Review: Brave

My family went to view the new Pixar movie, Brave, on Saturday. We have enjoyed all of the previous Pixar films.  Would Pixar continue with another winning animated movie with an excellent story or would they finally miss on a movie?

Plot:
(This review will have spoilers.)

Princess Merida is the first born child of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. She is fiercely independent and would rather be shooting her bow and riding her horse instead of training to be a future queen. The Queen and Merida’s relations is the center of this movie.
The time for the oldest son of the tribes to compete for Merida’s hand in marriage. Merida is not ready to get married. In an attempt to not become betrothed, she competes in the Archery contest and bests all of her suitors.  This has caused a great rift between her and her mother, Queen Elinor, and potential war with the other three tribes.

After a confrontation with Queen Elinor, Merida rides away into the wilderness while upset. She finds a witch and asks for a spell to change her mother so her mother will not make her get married. The spell has unforeseen effects and consequences. Unless Merida can change herself and find a way to reverse the spell, it will have devastating effects on her family, her kingdom, and her mother.

What I liked:
This is a great mother/daughter coming of age movie. This relationship is bumpy and complex. It continues to grow and change through the whole movie.

I loved the setting in ancient Scotland. The scenery was beautifully drawn. At times it appeared almost real.

Brave brings a lot of humor to the screen. The triplet younger brothers of Merida were a great comic relief. King Fergus has some funny moments also.

What I not Like:
This movie was a bit intense for little kids. We did not notice that it was rated PG and not just G. If you have kids under 8 years old, it might be a bit too scary in spots or too intense.

Review:
I really enjoyed this movie. It was a fun movie for kids and adults. The Bear scenes are a bit scary for the little kids. Pixar continues to produce top quality animated movies.

My Grade: B+
