Today is Star Wars Day! May the Fourth Be With You. I am strong in the Fourth, and the Fourth is strong in me.
Back in 1977, I officially became a Star Wars fan. At six years old, I begged my parents to take me to see this movie everyone was talking about. I don’t think either of them was especially excited, but I absolutely was. After some serious parental suspense—they held it over my head for two full weeks—I finally got my wish.
My parents scheduled a trip to the drive‑in to see Star Wars. The moment that massive Star Destroyer scrolled across the screen, I was hooked for life. I’ve been a fanboy ever since.
We’ll celebrate Star Wars again on May 25, and tomorrow we’ll honor the dark side with May the Sith… I mean, May the Fifth.
May the Fourth is an awesome play on words for us geeky folk. In the Star Wars universe, the iconic phrase is “May the Force be with you.” It didn’t take long for geeks everywhere to embrace May 4th and turn it into a celebration of all things Star Wars. Because of that clever twist, May the Fourth officially became known as Star Wars Day.
Interestingly, May the Fourth wasn’t the original Star Wars celebration. There are actually two major dates tied to Star Wars fandom in May. We’ve already talked about May the Fourth, but May 25 is just as important. May 25 is Geek Pride Day, marking the original theatrical release of Star Wars back in 1977.
Days like today remind me just how much my childhood was shaped by George Lucas’ iconic trilogy. After Star Wars hit theaters, everything changed. The toys I played with became Star Wars action figures and vehicles. Playground role‑playing revolved around rebels, stormtroopers, and Jedi. Every stick I picked up became a lightsaber—complete with sound effects in my head… and often out loud.
Honestly, that still happens.
As I sit here wearing a Star Wars T‑shirt, I’m reminded just how deeply Star Wars is woven into our culture—and into who I am.
I love Star Wars. Happy Star Wars Day!
Stay Geeky!
