I have always loved a good alternate history story—those “what if” moments that change the course of human destiny. One of the most fascinating questions in modern sci-fi is: What if the Soviet Union had won the race to the moon?
The new Apple TV+ series Star City dives deep into that very premise. Set in the expansive world of the hit series For All Mankind, this propulsive, paranoid thriller takes us back to the early days of the space race, but this time, we’re seeing it from behind the Iron Curtain. The series moves away from the NASA heroics we know and instead explores the high-stakes lives of the cosmonauts, engineers, and intelligence officers embedded within the Soviet space program.
Created by Ben Nedivi, Matt Wolpert, and Ronald D. Moore, Star City stars Rhys Ifans as the “Chief Designer” and Alice Englert as Anastasia Belikova—the first woman on the moon in this timeline. Expect a colder, sharper look at the space race where the greatest dangers aren’t just in orbit, but in the shadows of the Soviet regime.
