Baldur’s Gate TV Series in Development with HBO

If you haven’t had enough of the sprawling narratives in Baldur’s Gate 3, there is legendary news on the horizon. While a Baldur’s Gate 4 video game isn’t expected anytime soon, HBO has officially announced a Baldur’s Gate TV series that will serve as a direct continuation of the game’s storyline.

The Creative Team

The project is in elite hands with Craig Mazin (Chernobyl, The Last of Us) serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Mazin isn’t just a fan; he’s a dedicated Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast who has been a Dungeon Master for his own weekly group for over 15 years. His passion for the source material is deep—he has reportedly logged over 1,000 hours in Baldur’s Gate 3 and even conquered the game’s brutal Honor Mode.

What to Expect

Working alongside Hasbro Entertainment, Mazin plans to blend legendary faces with fresh perspectives:

  • The Protagonists: The series will initially focus on new characters, staying true to the D&D tradition of watching “level one” adventurers grow in power through combat and trial.

  • Returning Favorites: Expect to see iconic allies, villains, and devils from Baldur’s Gate 3 to ground the show in the world fans already love.

  • Lore Accuracy: To ensure the series feels authentic, Chris Perkins—a legendary figure and former Head of Story at Wizards of the Coast—has joined as a consultant to maintain the perfect balance of lore and mechanics.

A Growing Universe

Fans of the Forgotten Realms have even more to look forward to. This HBO announcement will not affect the Netflix live-action series currently in development with producer Shawn Levy (Stranger Things). The plan is for both high-budget adaptations to coexist, expanding the D&D cinematic universe like never before.
