Rest in Peace, Bonnie Tyler

Bonnie Tyler passed away on July 8, 2026, at the age of 75. The Welsh singer, born Gaynor Hopkins (later Gaynor Sullivan after marriage), became one of the most distinctive voices in popular music thanks to her powerful, husky vocals.

Tyler enjoyed tremendous success throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Her country-pop hit“It’s a Heartache” reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, while “Holding Out for a Hero” became an enduring anthem after appearing on the Footloose soundtrack.

Of course, she will forever be remembered for “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” the epic power ballad that spent four weeks at No. 1 in the United States in 1983 and became one of the defining songs of the decade. More than four decades later, it remained a beloved classic that audiences still sang along with wherever she performed.

As recently as March of this year, Tyler was on stage at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire, captivating the crowd and leading them in a passionate singalong of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” 43 years after its release. She was scheduled to perform in Cardiff shortly thereafter, but health issues intervened. Following emergency surgery in Portugal to repair a perforated intestine, Tyler was placed in a medically induced coma. Although she regained consciousness in June, her recovery was slow, and she ultimately passed away on July 8.

Rest in peace, Bonnie. Your music provided the soundtrack to countless memories, and your remarkable voice will continue to echo through the hearts of fans for generations to come.
