Supergirl as film just felt lacking. Nothing in the film felt impactful or truly important within the universe it was in. Everything from a lackluster villian, a incredibly basic plot line, to characters that felt uninspiring the film truly struggled to hit.
Lobo was fun but felt overall very unessential to the story and just existed as a gun. Ruthye as a whole was just annoying and not a person I reached feeling of drive to want to root for. Krem was the most boring basic cut out for “I am the bad guy and I’m selfish and evil” that could have been placed in that role.
The plot is really where the film started to loose me. It takes way longer then it probably should for the mission to be complete and each stop on the story felt bland.
Now, Supergirl was certainly not a bad film. Visually, it knocked it out of the park. CGI was great, maybe a small step-down from superman in the crypto department but overall very solid. Costumes, especially Kara’s main two outfits, was beautiful. And the colors (except for the generic Grey bad guys) still held onto that fun whimsical scheme that is needed for a alien, space, superhero adventure.
The biggest positive by far was Milly Alcock. She is Supergirl. While every scene without her dragged, every single time she was on scene the film flowed and dragged you in. Great performance, combined with her solid character development throughout made her vastly more enjoyable then everything else.
As much as Supergirl is a top 5 superhero for me and I love her as a character, this is not a film that I will constantly want to return to, but it did make very excited to see Supergirl again in future James Gunn DCU projects.
