Actor Richard Riehle passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at the age of 78 from natural causes. He is survived by his wife, Jane Latham, and their four children.
In a statement released shortly after his passing, Riehle’s representation shared:
“A remarkable actor whose career in theater, film, and television spanned nearly five decades and more than 400 projects, Richard leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. Beyond his immense talent, he will be remembered for his genuine goodness, boundless kindness, and unwavering generosity, particularly toward emerging actors and filmmakers, whom he encouraged and supported at every opportunity. Our industry has lost an exceptional talent, and our community has lost a truly wonderful man.”
Appearing in over 400 projects is an incredible testament to his craft. Richard began his acting journey in regional theater before eventually making his way to Hollywood, launching his film and television career alongside “The Duke” himself, John Wayne, in the 1975 Western Rooster Cogburn.
Many of us remember and love him for his television work, especially his role as the lovable grandfather Walt Finnerty in the sitcom Grounded for Life.
Interestingly, Riehle also brought a very specific icon to life throughout his career. He suited up as Jolly Old Saint Nick (Santa Claus) across five feature films, two television series, and a made-for-TV movie!
Of course, Richard Riehle is perhaps best known for his unforgettable, quirky performance in the cult classic Office Space. He played Tom Smykowski—the high-strung employee who gets laid off from Initech, survives a hit-and-run accident, and ultimately lands a massive financial settlement that allows him to pursue his dream: inventing the “Jump to Conclusions” mat.
Thank you for all the laughs, iconic moments, and joy over the years, Richard Riehle. You will be deeply missed. Rest in peace.
