Sony Pictures has signed a deal with Valiant Entertainment (Comics) to adapt the Valiant’s Harbinger.  The script is being written by Eric Heisserer.  They have not announced a director at this time.

The contract with Sony and Valiant is for a five movie deal.  The five movie deal involves not only adaptations of Harbinger but also for Bloodshot.  The plan is for the five movies to have crossover movie with Bloodshot and Harbinger.

Valiant Comics are an independent comic publisher.  They were started 1989.  For a while in the 1990’s, they were the third largest comic book publisher.  They filed for bankruptcy in 2004 and shut down the company.  It was reopened in 2007 as Valiant Entertainment.  In 2012 Valiant relaunched their comic line and rebooted the whole universe.  Their characters only have about three years of history to factor into the movies.  This is way different than Marvel and DC characters who often have over 75 years of back story.

Valiant is looking at other movie studios to bring other comics and characters to the Silver Screen. They are hopeful to bring their character-centered storytelling to the movies and compete with the Marvel and DC.  They believe their stories can be told differently and without being tied to so much history in the comics.

As long as the stories are good, I believe this is wonderful news. There is the possibility of comic book movies running their course. But if the stories and characters continue to be the top priority, then they should be fine. It sounds like Valiant is dedicated to just that.
