Swallowed Alive: Ocean Survival Thriller 'Whalefall' Hits Theaters This October

From the ancient tale of Jonah to Disney’s Pinocchio, the terrifying idea of being swallowed whole by a ocean giant has fascinated storyteller lore for generations. While most of us are content satisfying that curiosity from the safety of dry land, the upcoming survival thriller Whalefall is about to give audiences a front-row seat to every diver’s worst nightmare.

Based on the acclaimed 2023 bestselling novel by Daniel Kraus (The Shape of Water), the film follows seventeen-year-old Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams), a scuba diver who plunges into the ocean off the coast of Monastery Beach in California. Driven by guilt, Jay is determined to find his late father’s remains. Instead, an unexpected encounter with a giant squid triggers a catastrophic chain of events, leaving Jay swallowed whole by a massive, 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale.

Trapped inside the creature’s dark, crushing digestive system with a rapidly diminishing air supply and an opening in the creature’s throat that could collapse at any second, Jay must rely on his survival training—and the hard-earned wisdom of his father—to escape before his tank runs out.
