Remembering 9/11: Twenty-Four Years Later

It has been twenty-four years since the United States was attacked by terrorists on September 11, 2001.

I remember that day as if it were yesterday. I was running late for work, and my wife was watching Good Morning America. As I entered the bedroom to grab my things and head out, the anchors interrupted the broadcast with breaking news: one of the Twin Towers was on fire. At first, they speculated that a plane might have accidentally struck the building.

Then it happened again.

I watched live as a second airplane flew directly into the second tower. At that moment, I knew something was terribly wrong. Despite the fear and uncertainty, I still went to work.

Not much work was done that day. When I arrived, everyone was gathered around televisions, trying to understand what was happening. Then came the news that a third plane had hit the Pentagon. Shortly after, reports emerged of a fourth plane crashing in Pennsylvania—its intended target believed to be either the White House or the Capitol Building.

We were told to go home and be with our families. I worked in a state office, and there was concern that government buildings could be potential targets.

That day is etched into my memory forever. It resonates with me in the same way Pearl Harbor did with my grandfather. The disbelief, the shock, and the fear were overwhelming—unlike anything I had ever experienced.

Today, we at Geeky KOOL pause to remember. We honor the lives lost in the attacks. We remember the heroes who risked—and gave—their lives rescuing others from the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. We recognize the courageous passengers of United Airlines Flight 93, who sacrificed themselves to prevent further tragedy in our nation’s capital.

We remember. We will never forget the bravery and sacrifice shown on one of the darkest days in American history.
