Movie Review: Black Widow

Movie Review: Black Widow

I haven’t stepped foot into a movie theater in a while.  What would bring me back to the movies?  A character who should have received a spin off movie after her appearance back in 2010.  Black Widow finally headlines a movie after the long wait.  But would it be worth the wait or disappointment after wishing for this moment for over a decade?

Plot:
(There will be major spoilers– be warned)

In 1995, a family of Russians living in Ohio, runs for their lives.  They narrowly escape from the United States to Cuba to end their mission as the parents being spies. Natasha Romanoff was a young girl along  when this happened.  She was separated for with her faked family including her sister Yelena Belova.

Right after the events of Captain  America: Civil War, Natasha, the Black Widow, goes on the run.  Secretary of State Thunderbolt Ross leads the hunt down for Natasha. During this time on the run, she is attacked by the Taskmaster. This lead her to discovered the Red Dust, to remove the mind control of the Red Room, and a note.

The note bring Natasha back to her fake (but didn’t feel fake) younger sister, Yelena Belova.  Yelena had been trained in the same assassin school called the Red Room.  Natasha got out of the assassin life and thought she killed the Head of the Red Room.  Sadly, she hadn’t but this lead to intense mind control being used to control the girl at the Red Room.  Yelena only got out when she was exposed to the Red Dust to remove the control.

Being hunted by Red Room and Ross’ troops, the sisters go on a mission to free their fake father, Alexei Shostakov, aka the Red Guardian, from Prison to help hunt down the Red Room.  They are led back to their fake mother, Melina Vostokoff, who was a former Black Widow herself.

This all leads to a grand ruse and battle at the end.  Will Black Widow get her revenge and free the assassin girl, widows, from the mind control? Will she be reunited with her family?  Or will her family members betray her once again?

What I liked: (More Spoilers)

This movie is a spy thriller film wrapped in a super hero movie set in the MCU. It has the general feel of Captain America: Civil War, which is my favorite MCU film.  There is lots of adventure and thrills around every corner.

The chemistry of the actors is specular.  They flow well with each other and shine on the screen.  The casting fits perfect with Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Rick Mason, William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross, with Ray Winstone as Dreykov, and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff.  These characters are fun.

Scarlett Johansson finally gets to fully shine as The Black Widow.  She proves to the critics that female let superhero/ action movies can be amazing.  Johannson grabs the spotlight and never looks back.

What I Did Not Like: (Spoilers)

At the end we have a bit of a cliffhanger and then it is ignored with “Two Weeks Later”.  I know this will come up again later.  I have my theories of what might have happened but I don’t like how it flowed

Review:

I loved this film. It was worth waiting for but it should have been made years ago. We should have gotten more than one Black Widow movie.

My Grade: A
