Heroes, Villains, and Me: Comics I Am Loving

“Heroes, Villains, and Me” is a periodic article on Geeky KOOL by Larry Litle about the world of comic books and my reaction to it. “Heroes, Villains, and Me” is not a comic book review article. I will write about current events, speculation and rumors, or my own wacky thoughts about the world of comic books and related stuff.

We are living in a renaissance period for comic books.  There is a ton of great books with excellent writing and gorgeous art.  The story and plot is well developed.  We have great choices in our heroes and our books. There are bad stories with not wonderful art but there is a plethora of good books if you know where to look.

Both DC Comics and Marvel Comics have great comic books.  There is a ton of wonderful comics from the second tier comic companies like Dark Horse, Image, Top Cow, Dynamite, and many more. Independent publishers and self funded creators also put out a ton of wonderful comics.

Here is a list of some comics that love. I look forward to these comics every month and haven’t been disappointed.

Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows

What if Spider-Man’s One More Day had never happened and Peter and Mary Jane would have remained married?  What if Peter and Mary Jane had a daughter, Annie, with Spider powers?  What if Peter developed a suit from a bad guy’s tech to give Mary Jane abilities?

This is what Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows is all about.  It is a great about a family trying to be normal and yet heroes to save the day.

Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows is written by Gerry Conway and art by Ryan Stegman.

This is one of my favorite books because it is my Spider-Man.  It is my version of Spidey.  #MySpidey

Black Widow

After the mammoth success of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee’s run on Daredevil, they kicked off a new run on Black Widow.  They brought their vision and phenomenal story telling to Black Widow.

Natasha Romanoff stole files from S.H.I.E.L.D. because she was being black mailed.  Intrigue and adventure leads Black Widow deep down the rabbit hole of her past.

This comic is well written and beautifully drawn. It is the best Black Widow story I have ever read.

Ms Marvel
Kamala Khan is a teenager girl with awesome super powers. She can change what she looks like and change size.  She is known for creating a super big fist to punch bad guys.

Kamala is a  Pakistani American from Jersey City, New Jersey.  She struggles with her identity as any young teenager does along with struggling with family, her faith, and being a superhero.

Kamala is this generations Peter Parker.  It is easy to relate to Kamala.  She is a real person with real struggles.

Ms Marvel is written by G. Willow Wilson.  Wilson is a Muslin America.

Captain Marvel

Carol Danvers is a tough as nails former Air Force Pilot.  She is one of the most powerful superheroes on Earth.  She is the leader of the space based task force to prevent alien attack on Alpha Flight Station.  She heads up the Canada and now space based Alpha Flight superhero group.

Carol struggles with wanting action and needing to be responsible as the head of this organization. She struggles with the recent Civil War between her and her allies against Tony Stark’s group of heroes.  She did what she thought was the right thing but made a lot of enemies of her friends along the way.

Carol might be powerful and mighty but she is still vulnerable.  I am a part of the Carol Corps!  #CarolCorps

Wonder Woman

75 years of Wonder Woman and she is still going strong.  The relaunch of Wonder Woman with Rebirth has put her in a weird place.  Her history is folding upon itself.  What is her real history?  Where is the mystical island of Themyscira aka Paradise Island?

The story is split between a historical look at Wonder Woman coming to America and her current search for herself.

Future Quest

When I was a kid, I loved the heroic character for Hanna-Barbera.  Johnny Quest and family leads the main story.  Space Ghost and his side kicks, Jan, Jayce, and Blip jump into the action. They are joined by the awesome characters of The Herculoids, Frankenstein Jr, The Birdman, Mightor, The Impossibles, and the Galaxy Trio.

There is a breach in the universe and things are coming through to Earth that shouldn’t. Some are terrible creatures and others are heroes to help the cause.

This comic is just fun. It brings me back to re-runs of these shows after school.  I love reading this comic.

Those are just a few comics that I am loving. These always make it to the top of my pile.  What are you reading that you love?  Tell us in the comments below.
