From the Captain’s Chair to the DeLorean: The Versatile Talents of Tyler Dunivan

The Avalon Universe, a standout in the Star Trek fan film community, recently released a must-see clip featuring their lead, Tyler Dunivan. Known to fans as the commanding Captain Derek Mason, Dunivan brings a grounded authority to the bridge, but he is also gaining notoriety for a very different reason: his uncanny resemblance to Michael J. Fox.

Dunivan hasn’t just mastered the look; he has perfected the iconic cadence and mannerisms of Fox’s most famous characters. Whether he’s wearing a Starfleet tunic or a red puffer vest, the transformation is seamless.

A Personal Look Behind the Scenes

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Tyler several times at various comic and geek conventions, where he often draws crowds with his spot-on Marty McFly cosplay. He is an incredibly cool guy—approachable, talented, and deeply passionate about his craft.

A few years back, AJ and I had the opportunity to hang out on the set of an Avalon Universe production. Seeing Tyler work was a highlight; he was the ultimate professional during takes but remained incredibly fun and engaging to talk to behind the scenes.

Why the Avalon Universe Matters

The Avalon Universe has carved out a unique space in the Star Trek mythos. While many fan films try to replicate the past, Avalon succeeds by capturing the heart and spirit of the Original Series while telling entirely new, high-quality stories. Between the sharp writing, crisp direction, and top-tier acting, these films feel like a lost chapter of the Trek franchise brought to life for a modern audience.
