Without a doubt, one of the greatest, most emotionally gripping Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stories ever told is The Last Ronin. Originally published by IDW Comics as a five-issue miniseries between 2020 and 2022, the groundbreaking story marked a historic creative reunion for TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.
Set in a dark, totalitarian future New York City, the story follows Michelangelo. Devastated by the tragic deaths of his brothers and Master Splinter, Mikey takes up the mantle of the solitary “Last Ronin.” Armed with the signature weapons of all four turtles—Leonardo’s katanas, Donatello’s bo staff, Raphael’s sai, and his own nunchucks—he sets out on a relentless, gritty mission of vengeance to hunt down Oroku Hiroto, the ruthless grandson of the Shredder.
A New Developer Takes the Mantle
Fans have been desperate for a proper video game adaptation, and the project just received a massive upgrade. Originally announced under a different studio, Paramount Games Studio officially revealed at Summer Game Fest that the title has been completely revitalized. It is now in development as a major AAA action-adventure game by the legendary combat masters at PlatinumGames (NieR: Automata, Bayonetta).
With Platinum’s reputation for fluid, fast-paced martial arts gameplay, this adaptation is shaping up to be a dream come true for TMNT fans. The developers are aiming to fuse their world-class hack-and-slash combat mechanics with a deep, cinematic, western-style narrative inspired by modern heavyweights like God of War.
TMNT: The Last Ronin is currently in development for a next-gen release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
