A Triple Threat of Nerdiness: Why May 25th is the Ultimate Geek Holiday

Today is Memorial Day, a solemn time of remembrance for our nation’s fallen heroes. But by a unique turn of the calendar, May 25th also marks a massive celebration for the pop culture community. Welcome to Geek Pride Day—the ultimate trifecta of nerd holidays!

Today, we aren’t just celebrating one fandom; we are celebrating three. At Geeky KOOL, we are diving deep into Geek Pride Day, Towel Day, and The Glorious Twenty-Fifth of May. Here is why this date is so legendary.

1. Geek Pride Day

Geek Pride Day originated in Spain, sparked by a group of self-proclaimed geeks known as the “come libros” (book eaters). To celebrate their collective nerdiness, they famously created a human version of Pac-Man. The movement officially crossed over to the United States in 2008, and we’ve been proudly celebrating it ever since.

The holiday was intentionally set on May 25th to coincide with the theatrical release of the original Star Wars in 1977. Remarkably, this year marks the 49th anniversary of a galaxy far, far away. Even nearly five decades later, Star Wars remains one of the most influential and important cinematic milestones in my life.

2. Towel Day: Remembering Douglas Adams

Towel Day is an annual tradition dedicated to honoring the memory of the brilliant sci-fi humorist Douglas Adams, observed two weeks after his untimely passing in 2001 at the young age of 49.

Adams gave us The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy “Trilogy of Five” (yes, that is exactly how it’s referred to, despite having five books!). It stands as one of my all-time favorite sci-fi series. Adams was an absolute genius at blending intricate storytelling with sharp, absurd humor.

If you’re wondering why a towel takes center stage today, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy explains it best:

“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value — you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble sanded beaches of Santraginus V… wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal…

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (non-hitchhiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits… Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or a dozen other items… What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with.”

So, as the slang goes: Hey, you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There’s a frood who really knows where his towel is.

3. The Glorious Twenty-Fifth of May

Finally, today is a day to celebrate the late, great Sir Terry Pratchett and his iconic fantasy realm, Discworld—a flat world balanced on the backs of four massive elephants which, in turn, stand on the shell of the giant space turtle, Great A’Tuin.

In Pratchett’s lore, the 25th of May is quietly observed by the survivors of the People’s Revolution, which overthrew the tyrannical reign of Lord Winder. To honor the occasion, fans wear a sprig of lilac to remember the fallen Watchmen of the Night Watch: Cecil Clapman, Ned Coates, Dai Dickins, John Keel, Horace Nancyball, Billy Wiglet, and (albeit temporarily) Reg Shoe.

And honestly, you have to love the official slogan of the People’s Revolution: “Truth, Justice, Freedom, Reasonably Priced Love, and a Hard-Boiled Egg!”  (Wikipedia)

Celebrate Your Inner Geek

Today belongs to all of us. Whether your heart lies with the Force, a hitchhiker’s towel, a sprig of lilac, or a completely different fandom altogether, we can all agree on one thing: it is absolutely great to be a geek.

Take some time today to celebrate exactly who you are, fly your nerd flag high, and as always…

Stay Geeky!
