The Afterlife: Make It So- Sir Patrick Stewart Passed Away

The geek world lost one of its true legends yesterday.

Sir Patrick Stewart, the iconic actor who brought Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Professor Charles Xavier to life, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at the age of 86. According to the announcement shared through his official social media, Stewart died at his home in Los Angeles following “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.”

The announcement painted a touching picture of Stewart’s final days, surrounded by his family and friends, with music, prayer, tears, and laughter filling the room.

Stewart leaves behind an extraordinary career spanning more than six decades across the stage, television, movies, animation, and video games. Before becoming an international star, he established himself as an accomplished Shakespearean actor and longtime member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

His unforgettable voice also made him a natural fit for voice acting. For gamers, one of his most memorable performances came as Emperor Uriel Septim VII in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

The sheer number and variety of Stewart’s roles are impressive. His career included memorable performances as Captain Ahab in the 1998 Moby Dick miniseries and Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol.

But for many geeks, there are two roles that will forever define Patrick Stewart.

The first is Professor Charles Xavier, the powerful telepathic leader of the X-Men. Stewart first took on the role in 2000’s X-Men and returned to Charles Xavier repeatedly over the following decades, including Logan and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. His final appearance as Professor X is set to come posthumously in Avengers: Doomsday.

And then there is Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Beginning with Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987, Stewart transformed Picard into one of science fiction’s most beloved captains. He played the character throughout seven seasons of The Next Generation, continued the journey in four Star Trek feature films, and eventually returned to the captain’s chair for Star Trek: Picard.

There are countless Picard moments I will always remember, but Star Trek: The Next Generation’s “Chain of Command, Part II” will forever stand out to me. It was an incredible performance and a reminder of just how much intensity, dignity, and humanity Stewart could bring to a character.

Sir Patrick Stewart was more than Picard or Professor X. He was a legendary actor who clearly loved his craft and spent a lifetime bringing unforgettable characters to audiences around the world.

For those of us who grew up watching the Enterprise soar across the galaxy or Professor Xavier welcome another generation of mutants into his school, it feels like we have lost a member of our own geek family.

Sir Patrick, we already miss you. Thank you for more than six decades of incredible performances and amazing memories.

And now, one last command from the bridge:

Go toward the four lights, not five. Set a course at Warp Factor 8.

Engage!
