Small Cars, Big Explosions: Matchbox: The Movie

Following the colossal box-office success of Barbie, Mattel Studios is continuing to bring its most iconic toy lines to life—and this time, they’re hitting the gas with Apple Original Films and Skydance Media for Matchbox: The Movie.

Directed by stunt coordinator turned action director Sam Hargrave (Extraction, Extraction II) and written by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan), the film transforms the beloved die-cast miniature vehicle brand into a high-octane, globetrotting action-comedy.

The story centers on Sean (John Cena), a veteran undercover CIA operative who unexpectedly returns to his quiet hometown to reconnect with his group of estranged childhood friends. Back when they were kids, the crew spent endless hours racing Matchbox cars together in their driveways.

However, nostalgia quickly turns to mayhem when Sean’s dark past catches up to him. Before they know what hit them, his long-absent former leader accidentally gets his old friends embroiled in a frantic, high-stakes international pursuit to recover a stolen weapon and stop a global threat.
