Powers Gets a Second Life as Adult Animation on Netflix

Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming created something truly unique with Powers. The comic blends noir police drama and crime fiction, all set within a world populated by superheroes. Instead of focusing on capes and costumes, Powers tells its stories through the eyes of detectives investigating crimes involving super‑powered individuals—a perspective that set it apart from most superhero comics.

The series was previously adapted into a live‑action television show that debuted on the PlayStation Network in 2015. The show ran for two seasons, with ten episodes per season, before being canceled. Unfortunately, because it was exclusive to the PlayStation Network, the series never reached a wide audience. Adult animation has surged in popularity over the past few years. Invincible has become a major hit on Amazon Prime Video, while The Legend of Vox Machina has generated strong buzz with fans of mature fantasy storytelling. Netflix itself has already proven its strength in the space with successful adult animated series such as Castlevania, Devil May Cry, and Arcane.

This new adaptation of Powers feels like a perfect fit for the medium. Telling a gritty, street‑level story about law enforcement navigating a world of superhumans works especially well when unrestricted by practical effects or broadcast limitations. For fans of the original comic—and for viewers who missed the first adaptation—this Netflix revival could finally give Powers the audience it deserves.
