Legendary comic book writer and artist Sam Keith passed away on March 15, 2026, at the age of 63. Keith lost his battle with Lewy body dementia, a degenerative neurological disease. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kathy Keith.
Keith began his career in comics at just 17 years old, working with Comico Comics before moving on to Marvel Comics. During his time at Marvel, he left a lasting mark with memorable work on The Incredible Hulk and Marvel Comics Presents, most notably illustrating Wolverine storylines that showcased his evolving, unconventional style.
In 1993, Keith created The Maxx for Image Comics, a deeply surreal and influential series that explored themes of identity, trauma, and reality. The Maxx stood out for its bold visuals and psychological depth and was later adapted into an animated series for MTV, introducing Keith’s vision to a wider audience.
Keith is also widely known for his collaboration with Neil Gaiman on The Sandman for DC Comics, where his art helped define the early tone of the landmark series. His work on The Sandman contributed significantly to the title’s lasting legacy and critical acclaim.
Sam Keith brought a distinctively surreal, gritty, and expressive art style to everything he worked on. His visual storytelling was instantly recognizable—often haunting, emotionally raw, and endlessly imaginative. Keith’s influence can still be seen across modern comics and animation, inspiring countless artists and creators.
Rest in peace, Sam Keith.
Your stories, characters, and singular vision will not be forgotten.
