The “geek culture” community lost a bright light this week. It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of Nicholas “Nicky” Brendon at the age of 54. To the world, he was an icon of 90s television; to his family, a beloved brother and son; and to us here at Geeky KOOL, he was a generous and authentic friend.
A Meaningful Encounter at Branson Con
Back in 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to interview Nicky for Geeky KOOL during Branson Con. Before the chaos of the convention doors opened to the public, Nicky sat down with me for a conversation that I will never forget.
Most fans know him as the heart of the “Scooby Gang,” Xander Harris, on the legendary series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Others recognized him as the brilliant FBI technical analyst Kevin Lynch on Criminal Minds. But in our interview, he wasn’t just a celebrity—he was a man being incredibly “real” about his journey.
Bravery Beyond the Screen
During our time together, Nicky was full of life. He spoke candidly about working through his “demons”—his battles with depression and alcoholism. At the time, he seemed to be on a truly positive path, and his vulnerability was both inspiring and moving.
Hearing of his passing at just 54 hits especially hard. Being only a year younger than him myself, the news is a stark and painful reminder of how fragile life can be. My heart goes out to his family and the millions of fans who, like me, felt a personal connection to him.
A Legacy of Kindness
Nicky, thank you for being such a “cool guy” and for the hugs you shared all weekend long. You weren’t just a great interview; you were a kind soul who wasn’t afraid to show the world who you truly were.
Rest in peace, my friend. You will be missed.
