The DC Universe is expanding, and it’s bringing two of comic book history’s most iconic heroes to the small screen. DC Studios has officially announced Lanterns, a gritty, live-action Green Lantern series set to debut on HBO and Max.
Ditching the high-flying cosmic space battles of past adaptations, Lanterns grounds the ring-slinging mythos into a dark, Earth-bound mystery. Here is everything you need to know about DC’s next big TV event.
A Cosmic “Buddy Cop” Mystery
The series centers on legendary Green Lantern veteran Hal Jordan as he takes newly recruited Lantern John Stewart under his wing. Rather than patrolling distant galaxies, the duo finds themselves assigned to an Earth-based case that hits close to home.
Described as a dark, True Detective-style mystery, Lanterns sees Jordan and Stewart investigating a shocking murder in the heart of the American Midwest. But what starts as a localized crime quickly uncovers a deep, sinister secret that ties back to the broader DCU overarching story.
Heavy Hitting Creative Talent
Behind the scenes, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have assembled a powerhouse creative team to bring Sector 2814 to life:
-
Chris Mundy (Ozark) serves as showrunner and executive producer.
-
Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, Lost) and acclaimed comic book writer Tom King (Mister Miracle, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) co-write the series alongside Mundy.
With this lineup, fans can expect a heavy emphasis on atmospheric tension, complex character development, and deep DC lore.
Mark Your Calendars
The wait won’t be much longer for comic fans. The premiere episode of Lanterns is officially set to drop on Sunday, August 16, 2026 on HBO and Max.
