Top 10 Frustrating or Confusing Things (to me) about Pokémon games!

For our second Pokemon post for my GeekyKool Pokemon post #2.  I love Pokemon as a franchise and the games were my first handheld (Yellow.)  But, when you are a true fan, you know your beloved fandom is not perfect and you can poke loving fun at it.  That is what I am doing here.  I LOVE Pokemon and I always will, but there are concepts that do not work, are annoying, complex, or just are too strange for my gamer groove.  This list is for that.  Have a blast…just do not blast off with Team Rocket! 😉

Top 10 Frustrating or Confusing Things (to me) about Pokémon games!

#1. The complexity of breeding,

Egg classes.  Seeing if the Pokemon get along.  Having to wait… And let’s not forget if you want to BREED a shiny! GAH! I only tried breeding a few times (I know I did the process wrong, ha,) but that was enough for me.

#2.  That there are barely different or puke-green shinies,

Shinies are so rad of a concept! They are rare and fun (although I did not get into doing all the complex methods,) but I have had two in my life in the main series games (Moon for me) and some in Pokemon Go.  The thrill of stumbling upon one is infectious!  So why on this green Earth would you make so many puke-green shinies?! Or ones that barely look different than the original?  With the older games, I get graphic limitations, but there is no excuse now.  It is just a missed opportunity.

#3. Gym leader using last-minute full-restore,

You are fighting the best of the best so you can be the best…like no one ever was. One step closer.  This fight has been hard.  They gym leader is on their final Pokemon and you are about to get that sweet badge after one more hit when the dreaded text pops up: “Gym Leader _______ uses Full Restore…” Wait for all the beeps coming out of my mouth now!

#4. Critical Hits at not useful times,

Critical hits are great; random attack boosts help the battle go more in your favor.  In battle, this is excellent. But what if you finally find that rare Pokemon or even more exclusive shiny and you timed all your moves just right. Then, at the last second, your Pokemon does a critical hit on the enemy because they love you, making you lose your chance to catch it… *Sighs*

#5. Impossible to Beat Gym Leaders/Elite Four/Champions,

I am sure I know what all of you are thinking…FREAKING. WHITNEY!!! RAGE!!! She definitely is one for me, top five. But I know personally, I had a lot of trouble with the original generation four Elite Four and Champion.  Cynthia is the boss for a reason! Even in the remarks, they were challenging! Every trainer has that one experience with a battle that was too hard and just makes them burn worse than being trapped in a flame wheel!

#6.  Difficulty levels,

First we have old school grinding. Then generations four and five got pretty challenging. Fans complained.  To make it better, Generation six made it easier.  Too easy.  Generations seven to nine are a little better, but still not to the level of expectations of those original three generations.  People tend to forget these games are made for kids, but I am glad Pokemon is enjoyed for all.  Perhaps building in a difficulty element like fans have been asking for for years?

#7. Using over a dozen poke balls to catch one Pokémon!

WHY. WON’T. THIS. POKEMON. STAY. IN. THE. POKEBALL?! *Grumbles* I hate wasting items, which means wasting my hard-earned money.  Wasting attacks and times.  It is so frustrating! I just want to capture you to complete my Pokedex and use you to battle at my whim…I mean, to be friends…

#8. Caves,

Caves.  Oh? Did you want more of an explanation?  They just can be annoying.  I have a personal vendetta with them though.  My original Pokemon Pearl was glitched at the first cave after the first gym leader town.  I would literally be stuck in the wall and nothing fixed it! I restarted several times, but no luck.

#9. Unskippable cutscenes,

This one is more of a grip from my husband.  Sun and Moon was the first offender of this with the final cut scene.  It was twenty minutes long.  I happened to beat the main story before work and I wanted to make sure I saved after that hard battle. Since I couldn’t skip it, I was almost late for work.  I appreciate the cut scenes, but an option would be nice.

#10. Challenging evolution requirements

Why can’t we stick to natural evolution (you evolve when you get stronger. Makes sense) or a stone for some?  Happiness levels I can kind of see.  But trading is a sad concept since your Pokemon only leveled for it thought you abandoned them.  Attaching items?  Certain time of day?  Upside…down?  I get being creative, but some of these are too much, especially since these are creatures.
