Everyone’s story is different on how they broke into the business. This panel discussed the different ways creators have broke into a business which is difficult to get into. This panel included the big comic names of CULLEN BUNN (X-MEN), JASON LATOUR (SOUTHERN BASTARDS), SETH PECK (THE REALM), AMY CHU (RED SONJA), CHRISTOPHER PRIEST (JUSTICE LEAGUE) and hosted by JASON INMAN (DC All-Access). Each of their stories are different but they all said it is about getting to know people in the business and having contacts on the inside.
Cullen Bunn dreamed of writing comic books. He got his foot in the door slowly and faced lots of rejection as a comic writer even after he had indpendent successful independent comics. Cullen had to overcome his extreme shyness to make the contacts. This might be why Cullen is the Iron Man of comic writing. He cannot even tell you how many comics he is writing a month.
Amy Chu never meant to get into comics. She was a business major working in the real world. When a friend wanted her to work with her to create entertainment, Amy changed her carrer once again and started studying how to do comics. She never felt like a witer but became a great wrier for Wonder Woman.
Christopher Priest was a high school student who did an internship with Marel in the late 70s. He became an editor for them a year later. But it took a while for him to get his big break with the Falcon Miniseries. He was discipled by Jim Shooter and Stan Lee.
Everyone breaks in different but you have to continue to work on you craft and have thick skin. Get to know other contacts in the field.
