Could we finally be going back to the verse?
Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk have recently launched a brand-new podcast, Once We Were Spacemen. For fans of the short-lived but legendary space western Firefly, the title alone is a heart-tugging nod to their time aboard the Serenity. But while the podcast is a delight for anyone who loves the duo’s real-life friendship, it’s their recent social media activity that has the internet in a tailspin.
The “Recruitment” Videos
Over the last week, the Once We Were Spacemen Instagram has been dropping cryptic, star-studded clips. Nathan Fillion has been “recruiting” his former crewmates in a series of hilarious and nostalgic vignettes:
“It’s Not a Convention, Podcast, or Crossover”
The speculation reached a fever pitch when the account commented: “Some of you have guessed convention, podcast, or cross-over. You are wrong.”
This debunking has left fans wondering: could a Season 2 or a new limited series finally be happening? Since the show was infamously canceled by Fox in 2002 after airing only 11 episodes out of order, the “Browncoats” have never stopped fighting. While the 2005 film Serenity provided some closure, the deaths of Wash and Book—and the 20-year time jump—mean a revival would look very different today.
The Disney+ Factor
With Disney now holding the rights to the franchise, a revival on Disney+ isn’t out of the realm of possibility. The streaming giant is looking for “wins,” and a return to the Firefly universe would be a guaranteed blockbuster for their subscriber numbers.
