My Buddy, Mr. J. Christopher Wilson, is reviewing some movies and series. He has agreed to let us post his reviews here.
“Gritty, cold, and raw, just like the people it portrays, THE THICKET is a slow burn western story about a female outlaw ((Juliette Lewis) and her gang kidnapping a teenaged girl and traipsing across the US followed by the girl’s brother and some good-hearted outlaws (Peter Dinklage) who adopted the young man for a payout.
None of them are exceptional outlaws or heroes, except for maybe Reginald (Dinklage). In fact, they are all a bit bumbling, making them feel more authentic than a typical high-stakes action western. They are traumatized humans acting out their past hurts in very human and very violent ways. These are people—real people—surviving a harsh frontier in the only way they know how.
Do not let the word “bubbling” misdirect you. This is not a comedy nor a dark comedy. It’s a sometimes dusty, sometimes snowy, but an always dirty film about human survival. Violent and bloody but not grotesque THE THICKET hits the right amount of violence, bloodshed, and cold-hearted was without taking it too far.
3.5 stars is just right. If you enjoy rescue westerns give THE THICKET a try. Free on Amazon Prime.”
