Today is November 11, recognized across the United States as Veterans Day—a federal holiday dedicated to honoring all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans and to thank them for their service in protecting our freedoms.
Originally known as Armistice Day, the holiday commemorated the end of World War I. In 1954, it was renamed Veterans Day to honor all American veterans, not just those who served in World War I.
Across the country, there are many observances to mark the day. National cemeteries hold ceremonies to honor those who are no longer with us, including the solemn tradition at Arlington National Cemetery, where the President of the United States lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Many businesses also show appreciation by offering free items, discounts, and complimentary meals to veterans. Additionally, entrance to all National Parks is free on Veterans Day.
Let’s take a moment today to express our gratitude and make our veterans feel truly appreciated for all they’ve done for us.
Stay Geeky—and stay grateful.
