Hollywood Reports Zero Revenue for the first time ever

During our first VLOG Larry and I discussed slightly the affects that the Coronavirus had on the movie industry. With the shutdowns around the country the film industry was hit hard.

According to the Hollywood Report The US box office has recorded a zero revenue in their profit for the first time in their history. Think about that for a moment. For the first time in cinema history our country reported a zero profit for movie going! Not even wars have been able to do that to the film industry. The Coronavirus pandemic has completely changed the scene of the movie going experience as we have known it. At least for the time being while we all practice social distancing and stay home orders from our government agencies around the country.

I will admit that some of these figures may be a bit skewed as some Hollywood’s major distributors, led by Disney, declined to issue any figures. But it is still a new reality to the cinematic world

As the pandemic shows few signs of slowing down in our country… it leaves theaters and the film and entertainment industry in a state of uncertainty.
And yes, small, independently owned businesses are likely to be the hardest hit by this. But they aren’t the only ones. The pandemic will have ramifications that will be felt by every aspect of the industry. And who knows this may just usher in huge changes to the entertainment industry even after this pandemic.

Even Blumhouse Productions founder Jason Blum recently stated he believes the effects of VOD during the pandemic will cause the number of movie theaters to drastically shrink once things are back to normal. With things certainly not looking very encouraging right now, let’s hope that once this pandemic gets under control, we will see communities gather together for movies and fun once more. We will see communities support their small independent theaters. Also we may see more drive in movie theaters come back!

But it is completely possible that the movie going experience that we know and love have been forever altered. I just hope not  I love going to the theater. Sitting in the dark watching a movie on the big screen  experiencing opening nights, and all that it involves! Dressing up in Cosplay for certain movies. Gathering together with friends to watch a movie we have all been anticipating for months (sometimes years!). Date night watching a scary movie holding onto someone’s arm preparing myself for a jump scare… even though I always jump!
Let’s hope that once this passes we can once again pass the popcorn and enjoy the theater!

Thanks for reading this GeekyGirlNess!
Hope to see you all at the movies after this is over. Don’t forget I like butter on my popcorn!
And in these trying times remember be safe everyone, be kind and stay at least 6 feet away from people!
