Today is Guy Fawkes Day in Britain. It is a weird holiday for us Americans because of the person whom is celebrated. Or are they celebrating the stopping of him? Either way, it is foreign in our thinking.
On the 5th of November, Guy Fawkes led a revolt and a plot to blow up Parliament. We think politics are bad in the U.S. but we don’t have a day set aside to remember a guy that tried to blow up Congress. Well… not yet anyway.
The British had a kids rhyme to remember the events.
“Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and plot.
I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.”
Some will remember this is tied to the plot of the comic and the movie adaption of V for Vendetta.
Here is a cool video with Nick Knowles exploring the facts of the event. I love stuff like this. It helps us to remember, remember… well you get the idea.
