Yesterday would have been Jack Kirby’s the 104th birthday. He was born Jacob Kurtzberg on August 28, 1917 but later changed his name to Jack Kirby. We take a moment to remember Kirby and all of the contributions he has made to not only comics but life in general.
Kirby is one of comics greatest creators. He created and co-created most of the Marvel Universe. He created the New Gods characters for DC along with several other KOOL characters. He also co-created Captain America (with Joe Simon) in 1940 before the U.S. entered World War II and decades before Marvel Comics existed (Timely Comics at the time).
Kirby served in World War II. He was often used as a scout for army and would draw the reconnaissance maps and pictures of what challenged lied ahead. This was severely dangerous work.
