Breakfast Club Detention March 24, 1984

The Breakfast Club movie premiered on  February 15, 1985 throughout the United States.  But this movie takes place on Saturday, March 24, 1984.  As crazy as it if me, but this movie takes place 37 years ago.  I am a big fan of this film.

Five distinct students served full on detention starting at 7 am at Sherman High School.  Five different cliques were represented with “The Criminal”, “The Princess”, “The Brain”,  and “The Basket Case”. They were held up in the library until 4 pm that day for All Day Detention.  They came together against the tyrannical vice principal Richard Vernon.   Instead of writing the 1000 word essay on who they are, they left a simple but poignant note.

“Dear Mr. Vernon:

We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong, but we think you’re crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us… In the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain… …and an athlete… …and a basket case… …a princess… …and a criminal.

Does that answer your question? Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club.

This is a classic 80s film which is one of my favorites.  Happy anniversary for the date of the detention for The Breakfast Club.  I can hear Simple Minds playing right now, can you?
