In the wake of the devastation left by the Black Death, the common people of England barely survive day by day under the threat of starvation and severe economic oppression. As the ruling elite—14-year-old King Richard II’s council and wealthy oligarchs—continue to burden the poorest members of society with heavy poll taxation, a simple farmer’s simmering discontent erupts into full-blown revolution.
The Uprising is a historic action drama directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum, Captain Phillips). The film stars Andrew Garfield as “Ploughman,” a Robin Hood-like figure who becomes the de facto leader of the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 against institutional tyranny.
The film boasts a star-studded ensemble cast, including Jamie Bell (as radical priest John Ball), Cosmo Jarvis (as Wat Tyler), Woody Norman (as King Richard II), alongside Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, and Katherine Waterston.
