One of the most seminal, earth-shattering storylines in DC Comics history is finally getting the epic animated adaptation it deserves.
Originally spanning 1993 and 1994, the legendary Knightfall comic arc introduced fans to Bane—the brilliant, steroid-enhanced behemoth who systematically breaks the Dark Knight physically and psychologically before literally breaking his back. With Bruce Wayne incapacitated and forced to heal, the mantle of Batman is temporarily passed to Jean-Paul Valley (aka Azrael). However, Bruce’s replacement proves to be an increasingly unstable and brutally violent protector, forcing Gotham to witness a terrifying new kind of justice.
Now, DC Animation is bringing this massive saga to life as a gritty, Rated-R three-part animated movie event. Stripping away the excess to focus on a faithful, hard-edged narrative, the films perfectly evoke the brooding, ink-shadowed ’90s Gothic art style of the original comics.
Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall just celebrated its acclaimed world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment confirming the movie will officially release on Video on Demand (VOD) and home media later this year.
