Sal Buscema Passed Away

Legendary comic book artist Sal Buscema passed away on January 23, 2026, at the age of 89, just days before what would have been his 90th birthday. No cause of death has been announced.

Sal Buscema—alongside his brother, fellow Marvel icon John Buscema—helped define the visual language of Marvel Comics. Sal began his career as an inker in 1956 and rose to prominence as a penciler in 1968. Over the decades, he perfected the classic Marvel Method of storytelling, becoming one of the company’s most distinctive and influential artists.

His dynamic style, expressive faces, and unmatched sense of motion inspired generations of comic artists. For many, Buscema’s art represented the visual heartbeat of Marvel throughout the Silver and Bronze Ages, frequently imitated for its clarity, beauty, and storytelling precision.

Buscema’s legendary body of work includes celebrated runs on Captain America, Silver Surfer, The Defenders, The Incredible Hulk, and New Mutants. He also co‑created the original run of Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider‑Man in 1976—remaining on the title for an astonishing 100 issues.

In recognition of his extraordinary career, he received the Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013, honoring his decades of contributions to the comic book industry.

Rest in peace, Sal Buscema. Your spectacular style, passion, and artistry will never be forgotten.
