May 25th Is Three Geek Holidays Rolled into One Day

May 25th is an important day for geeks everywhere.  There are three separate but equally KOOL Geek celebrations for the 25th of May.    Some of us will celebrate all three of these geek themed holidays. We have The Glorious 25th of May, Towel Day, and Geek Pride Day.

The Glorious Twenty-Fifth of May is day to celebrate Sir Terry Pratchett and the fantasy world of Discworld.  The Discworld is “a flat world balanced on the backs of four elephants which, in turn, stand on the back of a giant turtle, Great A’Tuin” (Wikipedia)  Below is information on the importance of  The Glorious Twenty-Fifth of May.

The 25th of May is quietly celebrated by the survivors of the People’s Revolution, which ended the reign of Lord Winder. They wear a sprig of lilac and gather at the Small Gods Cemetery to honour the Watchmen who fell: Cecil Clapman, Ned Coates, Dai Dickins, John Keel, Horace Nancyball, Billy Wiglet, and (albeit temporarily) Reg Shoe.

The slogan of the People’s Revolution is Truth, Justice, Freedom, Reasonably Priced Love, and a Hard-Boiled Egg!  (Wikipedia)

Time to get out the lilac and boil some eggs.

Towel Day is a yearly day to remember the great humorist Sci Fi Author,  Douglas Adams at the two week mark after his early death.  The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy of Five Books (yes that is how it is referred to even though there are Five books and not Three) is Adams most famous book series.   This is one of my all time favorite Sci Fi series and writers. Douglas Adams was a genius on telling a good story with tons of humor.  He passed away at a very young age of 49.

A towel is a very important accessory in Hitchhikers Universe.  It is used for a little bit of everything. It can be used as a pillow or a way to block the horrible sounds of certain aliens.

Grab your towel and celebrate the genius of Douglas Adams with Towel Day!

Tomorrow is Geek Pride Day around the globe.  On May 25, 1977, the lives of geek and nerds (those of us who were alive at that time) were forever changed. This is the day a special movie opened to the Public.  Star Destroyers first blazed across the opening screen for Star Wars.

Star Wars made being excited and infatuated with science fiction KOOL at least for the summer of 1977.  People who would never watch Star Trek or other science fiction or fantasy movies were drawn to the experience of Star Wars.  People line up for blocks to see this film that changed how we saw space movies and those that loved space movies.  Even today, when a Star Wars movie comes out, it is an event.

Geeky Pride Day was created by Spanish blogger Germán Martínez in 2006.  He set it on the release day of the original Star Wars.  It soon spread across the world.  One of the first celebrations was a group 300 people playing a human Pacman game together.  They also created a list of basic geeky rights and responsibility like the right not to like sports, not to be in style, and to attend movie premieres on opening night.  It has been going on strong since then.

No matter if you celebrate Towel Day, The Glorious 25th of May, Geek Pride Day, or a combination of the three, go out and celebrate your unique fandoms and geekiness.  Do something fun to celebrate the day.  Take some pictures and videos and include Geeky KOOL on it.  you can use the hastags.
