Chasing the Sun: Welcoming the Summer Solstice and the Nostalgia of the Season

Happy Summer, everyone! Today officially marks the Summer Solstice, giving us the longest day and the absolute shortest night of the entire year.

I have always been a summer guy at heart. Looking back, a big part of that came from my deep disdain for school growing up—summer wasn’t just a season; it was the ultimate great escape. But even beyond the freedom, there has always been something genuinely magical about these longer days, when the sun hangs out in the sky well past 9:00 PM.

The solstice always brings back a flood of memories: packing up and heading to the lake or the beach with my friends back in high school, soaking up every bit of independence we could find. And it is incredibly hard to compete with the pure nostalgia of making homemade ice cream on a hot afternoon, sitting around a hand-crank machine with my father and grandfather. Plus, being born in July means celebrating my birthday has always been a major highlight of the season.

As the years have passed and I’ve gotten older, I’ll admit I don’t love the oppressive heat of July and August quite as much as I used to. But dealing with a little bit of humidity is a small price to pay. For the late sunsets, the memories, and the tradition—it is always worth it to welcome the summer.
