Disney is continuing its massive push to reimagining its animated classics for the live-action stage. While the core plots and beloved characters typically remain the same, these adaptations aim to bring a new level of visual realism to the stories we grew up with. Next on the horizon is the live-action adaptation of the 2016 hit, Moana.
I’ll be honest: I’ve never been a huge fan of taking a beautifully crafted animated classic and trying to “real-world” it. In my eyes, if a movie is already a masterpiece, why change the medium? However, Disney’s track record with these blockbusters suggests that my skepticism might be in the minority!
The first full trailer has finally arrived, giving us our first look at newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia as Moana and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui—this time in the flesh.
Check out the trailer below and tell us what you think! Are you excited to see Motunui come to life, or should Disney have left this one in the animation vault?
The live-action Moana is officially scheduled to hit theaters on July 10, 2026.
