This Christmas I was one of many people in a packed theater watching Anaconda 2025 and it was a good evening!
If you liked any of the other Anaconda movies this will be a perfect addition to your collection. Jack Black and Paul Rudd bring a humorous twist on the remaking of the Anaconda franchise. My personal rankings would rate Anaconda’s 2025 at 3 out of 5 stars. While the franchise started as a horror movie that had comedic elements it seems fitting that it’s turned into a comedy with horror elements.
I’ll try to avoid many spoilers, but it starts as a group of friends who want to reboot the Anaconda franchise. They pool their resources and head to the Amazon to recreate the next Anaconda movie. A scene involving their trained Anaconda goes wrong and to finish their film they must search for another Anaconda. Unfortunately, they find more than what they wanted to as the Anaconda’s feast on everyone around. The group using their “wits”, along with their superior trapping skills they try and make it out of the Amazon alive.
I thought the movie started strong, but it fell off a bit when someone remembered it was supposed to also be a scary movie. The abundance of cheesy and slapstick humor was shadowed by the lack of scary scenes. The jump scares seemed purposely predictable. A vehicle chase scene and lots of explosions were also things I didn’t expect to see in a movie about snakes. I believe they missed the opportunity to add a brief Christmas type scene due to the Christmas release date. I think throwing in a Christmas themes would have gone well with the movie and kept the movie alive years later in Die Hard movie type debates of whether or not it’s a Christmas movie. Unfortunately, the only thing that aligned with Christmas was the release date.
To summarize I still liked the movie and will definitely watch it again!!
