Heroes, Villains, and Me: Why All the Hate for the Inhumans TV Show

“Heroes, Villains, and Me” is a periodic article on Geeky KOOL by Larry Litle about the world of comic books and my reaction to it. “Heroes, Villains, and Me” is not a comic book review article. I will write about current events, speculation and rumors, or my own wacky thoughts about the world of comic books and related stuff.

ABC’s Marvel Inhumans is now 4 episodes in.  All I have heard is how horrible this television series is from various social media and geek websites.  After watching 4 episodes, I don’t get all the hate.

Don’t get me wrong.  Much of the acting is somewhat stiff. The writing isn’t the strongest.   But it isn’t as bad as what the critics are telling us.

The first two episodes were a little rough.  Some of the special effects were not very special, to say the least.  One of the fights scenes was poorly choreographed.  Yet these episodes weren’t awful. There were some redeeming parts to it.  Since then, the episode appear to better than the first two.

There are some bright spots to this series. I love Anson Mount as Black Bolt.  Mount was the star of the wonderful western series, Hell on Wheels.  Mount communicates to the screen and other characters silently and with facial expressions.  He pulls off this silent hero with style and flair.  He gives Black Bolt the silent strength the character deserves.

Lockjaw is a bright spot in this series.  He is adorable and fun.  The special effects of him teleporting are KOOL.  Lockjaw is taken down pretty easy.  I still love what they have done with him.

I honestly don’t love Medusa without her hair.  Her hair was forcefully shaven off of her in the first episode and hasn’t grown back yet. I am sure it will grow back before the end of the season and will be a weapon in the final battle.  She is a strong woman without the hair but has the plot of a fish out of water since she is stuck on earth.

This Marvel series isn’t at the quality of the Netflix series of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders.  It doesn’t stack up to the last season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  It isn’t on par with The Flash.  But I would put it on par with the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  I find it more watchable than last season’s Arrow.

The Inhumans is being destroyed by critics and some fellow geeks.  It has only 8% from the Critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 51%  from the audience.  IMDB has it at a 6.6 rating.  For me, it is better than any of those ratings.

This series is a bit uneven.  It has potential to become a fun series.  Give it a chance to grow and become an awesome series.  There is speculation that ABC will not renew this series even before it aired on television.  It will be sad if this show is canceled and not given the chance that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  received.
