The new companion for the Doctor

As most Whovians already know, the Ponds, Amy and Rory, will be limited in their appearances in the upcoming 8th season (New series-doesn’t count the Classic seasons). Amy Pond has been the Companion for The Doctor for two full season since Matt Smith took over. Rory joining later and then died, and then came back and died.  But he always came back eventually.  We have grown to really love the Ponds.  But all great things have to come to an end.

The Doctor can never be alone without a companion for very long. Some believe that the The Doctor is just a social creature who needs the companion. I believe that the Doctor does rely on his companions for socializing and personal development but I believe it goes deeper.

He needs a companion to balance him out. When alone, he appears to be more moody and does not examine the consequences of his actions with a critical eye. The Doctor is similar to Batman.  Batman needs a Robin to balance out the darkside that Batman gravitates towards. The Doctor needs his companion for similar reasons.

That being said, this week the BBC officially announced the Doctor’s new companion. Jenna-Louise Coleman (see picture below) will be the new companion. She is known for her roles in British shows Emmerdale and Waterloo Road.

“It’s not often the Doctor meets someone who can talk even faster than he does, but it’s about to happen. Jenna is going to lead him his merriest dance yet. And that’s all you’re getting for now. Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters. Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meets girl.” (BBC)  –Lead writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat

I know my daughter and I are eagerly anticipating the 8th season.  She will go around with fake British accent and say “The Doctor”. Occasionally, she will belt out an “Exterminate!” just for fun.
