So Long, Sanctuary, We will miss you.

The news broke earlier today that SyFy Network is not renewing their series Sanctuary.  This news took me by surprise. I really enjoyed all four seasons of Sanctuary. I love Amanda Tapping in this series even more than I enjoyed her in Stargate SG1/ Atlantis. I hate this time of the year when you find out that your favorite shows are not coming back.

Bryan posted about this early on Geeky KOOL. He asked the question if SyFy is becoming cable’s version of the Fox Network. He was not referring to politics but Fox’s habit of green lighting really KOOL sci fi shows and then killing them long before their time ie Firefly, Space Above and Beyond, Dark Angel, Brisco County Jr., and many more.

Lately, the SyFy Network has been killing off their great shows. They gave Eureka a half of a season when it deserved at least a full season if not more. Last year they canceled Stargate Universe, ending this great run of Stargate shows, just as it was finding its legs.  They also let go of Caprica, The Dresden Files, and the U.S. run of Doctor Who (which is now re-broadcast on BBC Amercia).  Bryan made a great comparison but in my opinion, they don’t appear to be there yet (if they dump Warehouse 13 this year then they will be there).  I am hopeful that the plan is not to replacing Sanctuary with more wrestling.

This article was intended to be a remembrance of the fun series, Sanctuary, so let me get on with it.  Sanctuary’s first episode was interesting but I was not convinced it would pull me into this world. But with interesting writing and great character development, they made it one of my favorite series. I loved most of the first season and second season. The third and fourth seasons were realy good but did not hit the same level of the first two season but it did not deserve to be canceled.

I love the strong character of Dr. Helen Magnus .  She is a kick butt character who knows when to fight and when to find a better way. She had her weaknesses and blind spots which made her even more appealing. She was a great role model for my eleven year old daughter on how to be a strong female and not lose yourself.

The rest of the cast and regular guest stars were awesome.  William “Will” Zimmerman is a great second in command and I love his Forensic Psychologist mode. The Big Guy is a constant KOOL character and I would love to have a Sasquatch as a Butler. I loved Ashley Magnus during the first season and her heated interactions with her mother– it was sad to see her dead at the beginning of the first season.  Henry Foss, the werewolf, was a geeky character that developed nicely over the four year.  They developed their guest stars in very appealing ways. I always loved to see Tesla, Watson, and Druitt appear on the show.

Today was a sad day with this announcement. It brought my mood down. I was looking forward to seeing how Magnus would manage and help the abnormals while hiding out underground.  It is too bad we will never see how that would play out.
I will leave you with the below comments from the Sanctuary Facebook page.

It’s true – the official news is out that Sanctuary will not be back for a Season 5. We will re-post comments from the Producers and the Network. There is no blame here. And we are SO grateful for all of you. Without such intelligent, fun, active fans, we wouldn’t have had an amazing four year run! C’mon now…group hug…. (Sanctuary Facebook page)
