My Thoughts on Marvel’s new Civil War

Civil War 2015

Marvel has this above image on their website.  It has the description of CIVIL WAR #1 — SUMMER 2015.  It is a classic image from the 2006 crossover, Civil War.

What?!?  Marvel had just announced their new Secret Wars mini series crossover for next year. It was going to be a huge event and I was very excited about it.  But now next year is slated to see the return of the Secret Wars and the Civil War.  Wow!

I am thinking there will be too many major crossovers in the Marvel Universe next year.  I can’t rap my mind around the return of both major events for next year.

The original Civil War mini-series was huge divide between two groups of heroes. Iron Man lead the group that sided with the government that all heroes should register their secret identities with the government, which became the law of the land. Captain America led the group of heroes that stood for the the right to be a superhero and maintain one’s secret identity. It was a huge event that shook the Marvel Universe with repercussions for years.

The Civil War was the series that brought me back to comics after 10 years away.  I had left the comic book readership in the mid 90s when I was low on cash. It was a time where the stories weren’t intriguing to me and when I had very little money. It was a perfect time to quit comics. But when I heard the news about the Civil War, I had to check it out.  It brought me right back into the full mix of things.

I understand revisiting the Secret Wars. It will be the 30th anniversary of the maxi-series crossover that captured my imagination as a early teen. We could revisit the Secret Wars was a new twist and it should be awesome.

I don’t understand bringing a new Civil War crossover the same year as the Secret Wars.  It isn’t the anniversary year for Civil War (that would be 2016).  I was just starting to believe some of the wounds from the Civil War were healing.  Now we are going to cause them to gash again?

I really would like to know what kind of Civil War story they will tell. Will it be back to the registration issue? Will Cap and Iron Man be opposed to each other?  Will it flow out of the Secret Wars since they appear to be back to back or going on at the same time? What are we gaining from another Civil War?

These questions will not have answers for a while.
