My Favorites of 2016 — Television Edition

2016 was a very rough year for many of us. We all had our own personal challenges and losses in 2016. 2016 seems to loom heavy.

We saw some of our favorite entertainers pass away.  Many of them passed away well before we thought they should.  It seems every day brings news of another death.  Curse you 2016!

Yet there was a lot of great things during 2016.  It wasn’t a total waste.  I want to give you my favorites from 2016. Here is the last in my series:  My Favorites of 2016 — Television Edition.

Television:
2016 was a great year for geeky television. There is a ton of great things I love watching.  It is amazing how good these shows are compared to geek shows just 10 years ago. If you look back in the 70s and 80s, geek shows were pretty bad.

This list will only be the shows I am watching. Shows like Lucifer and Games of Thrones might be awesome but I am not watching them.

Network TV:
Winner: Agent Carter
Agent Carter made a great impression on me.  I love a good strong female character.  I love period pieces.  Throw in some whacking sci-fi and comic book action and you have a perfect series for me.  Did I mention my crush on Hayley Atwell? I am still upset with ABC for canceling the series and that Netflix didn’t pick it up.

Runner Up: The Goldbergs
My second favorite show isn’t even a geek show.  The humor of the Goldbergs strikes a chord with me.  I love this family. I do love the 80s.  This show is an awesome sitcom.  I don’t usually have a sitcom on my list but this one is top notch.

Honorable Mention:  Reign, The Flash, Supergirl, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Here are some shows that I love dearly.  I considered each of them but they didn’t make the top two.

Cable: (Watch on Streaming)
Winner: The Walking Dead
This is an easy selection for me.  I know a lot of people are falling off of this series.  Yet I am still really into The Walking Dead. I have only seen the first episode of the Walking Dead for this current season.

Runner Up: Vikings
This History Channel series is a ton of fun.  It is a drama loosely based on some facts.  The action, fight scenes, and back stabbing make this show a must watch.  It isn’t for the kids but it is a ton of fun.

Honorable Mention: Last Ship
Last Ship was a series I gave a random chance but it has paid off.

Streaming:
Winner: Stranger Things
Netflix hit a home run with their new 80s series. Stranger Things is a combination of a Steven Spielberg and Stephen King movie in the 80s.  This show is anchored by great acting of children actors.  They make the series.  I binge watched the first season (only season so far) of series in 2 days.

Runner Up: Man in the High Tower
What is the Axis had won World War II? But what if there is videotape of the Allies winning while we are living in occupied America?  This show has a lot of twists and turns. It is set in the 50s after the Axis defeated the Allies.

Honorable Mention: Marvel’s Luke Cage, Marvel’s Daredevil,
I would be remiss not to include this two awesome series.  Netflix has nailed the Marvel world with their series.

Comic Book Based:
Winner: Marvel’s Luke Cage
I went back and forth on my favorite from this list.  It is hard to pick one.  I really enjoyed Marvel’s Luke Cage.  It reminded me of his character from the 70s.  It did make me very uncomfortable with the language especially the usage of the “N” word.  Only the bad guys really used it but it was a lot.  On the other side, I was fascinated with the development of the characters.

Runner Up: Marvel’s Daredevil
With Marvel’s Luke Cage winning the top spot, Marvel’s Daredevil is 1B.  The second season was even better than the first season.  The introduction of Elektra and Punisher were not forced.  It flowed naturally.

Honorable Mention: The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Favorite New Show:
Winner: Timeless
Here is a new show that I can’t stop watching.  This show has intrigued me.  I started watching it on Hulu to get caught up and couldn’t stop watching episodes.  I don’t know how they will save the past but I am in for the ride.

Runner Up: Designated Survivor
What if the President, the congress, the Supreme Court, and most of the cabinet were all killed at the the same time? There is always one member of the cabinet that is left behind in a secure place just in case.  That person becomes President. Kiefer Sutherland stars as the new President.

My Favorite Over All:  Strangers Things
Netflix has made me a believer. I can’t wait to explore more of the Upside Down world and this fun version of the 80s.

Many people will not agree with my choices and that is okay. We can all agree to disagree on our favorites from 2016. Feel free to leave your choices in the comment section.  We would love to hear about your favorites.  Arguments about why my choices are not as good as your can be fun as long as we can do it like adults.

That was the last article in the series for My Favorites in 2016.  I hope you enjoyed it.
