Movie Review: Jurassic World

Ever since Jurassic Park, I have wondered would have happened if they had ever opened the park.  Jurassic World takes us back to the Island.  All of the Dinosaurs are now in their appropriate areas.  It truly is an Island zoo to see what once was extinct.  What could go wrong?

Plot:
(There will be major spoilers– be warned)

It is now twenty two years after the disaster of the original Jurassic Park.  The island of  Isla Nublar was tamed.  The dinosaurs were rounded up.  New attractions and safety measures were put into place.  The park is finally open and has been open for 10 years.

The park is like any other theme park.  To keep interest up, you have to put out new and more exciting attractions.  You would think real life dinosaurs would be enough.  The scientists have to create new and more exciting dinosaurs.

Karen and Scott Mitchell send their sons Zach and Gray to visit Jurassic World.  Their Aunt Claire is is the Park’s Operations Manager.  Because of her responsibilities, she is unable to meet her nephews.  She assigns her assistant Zara to monitor them.  But Zach and Gray wander away for their own adventure.

Claire consults with  Owen Grady, a Velociraptor expert and trainer.  Claire’s boss, Simon Masrani, wants Owen to check out the security for the new genetically mutated mega dinosaur, Indominus Rex.  The Indominus Rex is very intelligent an has special abilities like camouflage and seeing infrared.  The Indominus Rex tricks an escape and starts killing and causing havoc.

The boys, Zach and Gray, end up exploring in an off limits area and ends up on a collision course with the muted monster.  Claire and Owen go out to rescue.  The thousands and thousands of guests are all in danger.  Will any of them survive?

What I liked: (More Spoilers)

This movie felt similar to the first movie, Jurassic Park. The two previous sequels felt more disjointed in comparison.  This movie has scenes that mirrored  Jurassic Park but not to the over the top level that is annoying.

I liked the characters of Claire and Owen.  I have read some reviews that really hated these characters especially Claire.  Claire is a very hard working person but has sacrificed any time for her family for her career.  She hasn’t seen her nephews in so long that she doesn’t recognize them.  Yet, when push comes to shove, she steps up and is willing to do anything to save them.  She becomes the hero even though she wouldn’t have believed it in the beginning of the movie.  I simply loved Claire taking charge and lighting the flare at the end of the movie.

Owen is a fairly stereotypical reluctant action hero.  Yet he is extremely likable.  He doesn’t want to be pulled in but isn’t short on the bravery when needed.  There is something KOOL about a guy that can handle raptors.

The dinosaurs were awesome.  They looked phenomenal.  They look better and better as technology advances.  I have loved dinosaurs since I was a little kid in the 70s and watched a ton of Land of the Lost.  They look so KOOL are awesome!

I love the fight scene between the Indominus Rex and the Ankylosaurus.  The Ankylosaurus, heavily armored with the ball tail, is an awesome opponent for the I-Rex.  He can’t simply put his mouth around him and crunch.  The Ankylosaurus has some good moves before the I-Rex finds a way to take him down.

The intense scenes in this movie were fantastic.  I love the build up and the fallow through.  I love when the Indominus Rex was both hunting Zach and Gray  and Claire and Owen.  I never feared for their lives but it was fun to see how they would get out of situations.

What I not Like:

The plot of this movie wasn’t very original.  It is a take off of the original Jurassic Park.  There was no fear for the main characters.  It was predictable, which is common for most Summer- Popcorn movies.

(Spoilers) The Indominus Rex being part Raptor was the worst non-surprise surprise reveal I have seen in a long time.  They tried to build up suspense but it was clear as day.

The Indominus Rex was just too much.  He is an alpha dinosaur with the body of a T-Rex, the arms and communication of a raptor, the power to camouflage,  gift to control of other dinosaurs, and the ability to out smart humans.  It was just too much.  They tried to make to bigger and badder and in some ways it was.  But a good old T-Rex on the loose would have been just as good.

Review:

I really enjoyed this movie.  It was a fun popcorn film with dinosaurs.  It wasn’t as good as the first movie but that would be hard to do.  I feared for all of the characters in the original movie but this time, I knew the boys, Claire, and Owen would survive.   There were times of intensity and fun.  I loved the dinosaurs in this movie.  And honestly, it is all about the dinosaurs.
