Movie Review: Birds of Prey

Here is an amazing review awesome guest writer, Brittney Greer.   Check it out below.

Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is a wild ride as the title proves! The story follows Harley Quinn, played by the talented Margot Robbie, after her split from the Clown Prince Mr. J. Harley strikes out to find her own way, and happens to pick up a hyena, which is a cool nod to the comics, a new apartment, and a whole lot of trouble.

Harley has to team up with Black Canary, played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Huntress, played by Mary Elisabeth Winstead, and Renee Montoya, played by Rosie Perez, to save a young girl from none other than Black Mask himself, Roman Sionis, played by the amazing Ewan McGregor.

BOP is such a fun movie from beginning to end with Harley narrating herself which leaves the viewer to wonder if we are getting the full story or just how Harley sees it. It has humor that has you laughing out loud and wishing you too had an egg sandwich, dark moments that have you a little uncomfortable, and fun Easter Eggs throughout.

Some of the most impressive scenes in the film are the in your face and colorful fight sequences. Each scene is beautifully crafted and executed perfectly. The hits are high impact, and has audiences roaring for more. They are sharp and clean and do not look bogged down with heavy CGI. We get to see some moves that I thought were only possible in the comics. It was empowering to see these broken and dysfunctional women coming together, standing strong, and kicking butt. Not to mention we get roller derby Harley and a fight in skates. Shout out to the hardwork from Director Cathy Yan and team for that mind blowing end fight when the Birds come together. I’m still blown away. Thank you to the writer, Christina Hodson, for throwing in that hair tie line.

The set designs and costumes were full of color and life. It felt so believeable that this could all be going down in Gotham while the Bat takes care of others from his rogue gallery in another part of town.

The acting was above and beyond. Margot is in fact Harley Quinn and does a phenomenal job. Another breakout was Black Canary who really shined through out. Chris Messina, who plays Victor Zsasz had another standout performance and upped the creep factor with cutting off faces. Yes, you read that correctly.

Something I loved seeing and what feels like an amazing moment for women in film is that we have a female director, Cathy Yan, writer, Christina Hodson, Margot Robbie, is Harley, one of the producers and helped with the script, we have female leads, and a female lead soundtrack, which is just amazing I might add. Songs are still stuck in my head. What these ladies have done is beyond fantastic. They found a way to make the characters and story extremely relatable and fought to keep the film Rated R. They kept true to the story they wanted to tell and were able to bundle it in an action packed joyride and it paid off!l

Not all of the characters are exact replicas from their comic origins and a few deaths were surprising, but keep in mind Harley is telling us this story, and shes not the most reliable narrator. I hope everyone gives this film a chance. You’re guaranteed to have a good time and leave with a smile on your face.
