Henson Company Talks KOOL Geek Movies and Long Awaited Sequels

In an article with Variety, Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company, talked about some of their upcoming projects.  She dropped some news that will excite many of the Geeky KOOL fans.

They focused on Billy Crystal as writer, producer and actor for Which Witch? movie.   Which Witch? is a children’s novel by Eva Ibbotson from 1979.   Arriman the Awful is a wizard that feels the need to get married to have a son to fulfill the prophesy.  He holds a contest between 7 witches to determine which one he will marry.

That is a KOOL idea for a movie and sounds pretty Geeky KOOL. But there is more Geeky KOOL news.  The article went on to stated that Henson Company is actively working on a Dark Crystal sequel (love that movie). A movie based off the Fraggle Rock television series is being developed.  They may be working on a sequel to 1986’s movie Labyrinth.

It’s also working on a quartet of legacy titles in the Henson library — a “Fraggle Rock” movie that’s been in development at New Regency; a sequel to 1982’s “The Dark Crystal”; a sequel to 1986’s “Labyrinth”; and a movie based on the Emmet Otter character. (Variety)

A lot of geek websites are going crazy about the idea of a Labyrinth sequel. I have seen several posts with excitement and hysteria.  But the Entertainment Weekly may rain on their parade. According to the EW, the Labyrinth sequel is not in development. It is an idea that is often discussed in internal meetings but they have no plans.

I am personally more excited about a Dark Crystal sequel instead of a Labyrinth sequel. Don’t get me wrong, I love the quirkiness of Labyrinth.  But I do prefer the weird sci fi/fantasy muppet based Dark Crystal.  It is spooky, strange, and intriguing.  I will watch the Dark Crystal any chance I can get.

I think it is very KOOL news out of the The Jim Henson Company. It is fantastic to see they aren’t just focused on children’s shows.
