GI Joe: Retaliation pushed back 9 months

The GI Joe sequel, GI Joe: Retaliation, was scheduled to open June 29th of this year. It has now been pushed back to March 29, 2013. (according to Blastr)  This news broke yesterday with the release date just over a month away.  It is being pushed back to reshoot some of the scenes and to make this movie 3-D, according to a Tweet from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. It was shot on Super-35 and will need to have some different shots  to make it work well with 3-D.

I was looking forward to seeing this movie in 2-D. It looked like a fun ride and the last trailer had pulled me on board. The addition of Bruce Willis and The Rock definitely brought this movie more onto my radar. It does not come across as a movie I need to see in 3-D.

On the positive side, there should be little to no competition for this kind of movie in March. GI Joe is a typical popcorn summer flick and it will have a chance to dominate as the top movie for a month. It had little chance of dominating this summer with Avengers, Prometheus, Amazing Spider-Man, and Dark Knight Rises in theaters around the same time frame.

There certainly are negatives around this change. The studios have already put out trailers promoting this movie. Hasbro Toy company has been marketing their tie-in toys. Even if GI Joe wins the all of April of next year, can it make more money than what it could over the summer? Don’t forget that some fans will be upset because they were expecting to see this film this summer.

I am not sure how most people feel, but I have grown tired of of the whole 3-D thing. The only time I am interested in the 3-D is if it significantly adds to the movie.  I loved watching the Avengers on the IMAX in 3-D but even in this movie, I didn’t feel was really enhanced with the 3-D.  The extra cost of the movie along with having to wear the glasses is not usually outweighed by the additional cost of taking the family to the movies.

If they would just forget the 3-D, I think this movie would have more of an appeal for me.
