Heroes, Villains, and Me: Free Comic Book Day

“Heroes, Villains, and Me” is a periodic article on Geeky KOOL by Larry Litle about the world of comic books and my reaction to it. “Heroes, Villains, and Me” is not a comic book review article. I will write about current events, speculation and rumors, or my own wacky thoughts about the world of comic books.

FCBD2015

Today was Free Comic Book Day. FCBD is the first Saturday in May. It is the day when you can go to your local comic store and sometimes your public library and score some free comics.

This year, I took my two children, 14 year old girl and 6 year old boy, with me to two locally owned comic shops. We showed up right after one of the stores opened. There were several free comics to chose. We picked up a few comics from each of us. Some of the comics were the same ones like the Doctor Who Comic.

The second shop had a variety of other comics to pick. Often different shops get different free comics to give out.  It is often beneficial to go to multiple comic stores. It allowed us have a good variety of free comics.

The three of us picked up comics that we don’t normally read.  This allows the comic publishers to get their materials in our hands.

Both comic book stores were buzzing with people. There were people dressed up to celebrate the day.  The stores were selling lots of other comics, games, and toys. It appeared FCBD was a big hit for the stores.

Both stores had comic creators on site.  Nicholas Ivan Ladendorf-Atreides,writer and artist of MENTAL was giving away issues of his story MENTAL.  Maia and Luna Cooper, the teenage sisters who are the writer and artist for Champions of Erendil where selling at one of the stores.  I made sure to pick up Champions of Erendil Vol. 1 (Trade). I also saw David Faught at one of the comic shops and he was busy doing sketches.  All four of these comic creators are local and it is wonderful that the comic shops had them on site to give them exposure to the crowds.

It was a wonderful Free Comic Book Day.  It appeared to be a win/win for all that participated in this event.
