Disney Removing Leia’s Metal Bikini Merchandise

LMB

According to Screen Crush, Disney is removing all of their Slave Leia or Metal Bikini Leia merchandise.  This is on the heels of Daisy Ridley’s, The Force Awaken’s Rey, interview with Carrie Fisher for Interview Magazine.  Fisher told Ridley to fight against wearing the slave outfit.  Fisher emphasized the need for slave girls is long past.

There is a huge push to remove the infamous metal bikini with association to Star Wars.  There are valid reasons and arguments on both sides of the metal bikini discussion.

In Return of the Jedi, Princess Leia is captured by Jabba the Hutt and his cronies.  She is forced to wear the metal bikini as his slave.  In the end, the slave outfit with the chain was used by Leia to kill Jabba. The outfit can be seen as women in slavery or in the opposite light that Leia used it to bring down slavery.

Return of the Jedi hit theaters in 1983.  I was 13 years old.  The metal bikini was magical for an adolescent boy especially one who loved Star Wars.  I never thought about any linking of this sexy outfit to the condition of slavery.

I have no issues with Disney making this move.  Tens of Thousands if not hundreds of thousands women are taken every year in the USA and trafficked as slaves.  If Disney make this move to bring light to this major issue, then more power to them.  Slavery of any kind is wrong and we should fight against it.
