10 Best Geeky KOOL Fictional Fathers

I had intended for this post to come out on Father’s Day but life got in the way. This list was difficult to narrow down and to order.  I re-ordered it several times.  Let me know what your thoughts are, who I missed, and what order they should be in.

10 Best Geeky KOOL Fictional Fathers

10) Buddy Baker (Animal Man)

Non-Comic book geeks will have no idea about Buddy Baker. Buddy has the ability to borrow the abilities of animals. Buddy’s family is the core of who he is and why he is a super hero. His wife and kids are at the center of his story and his life. He has those special conversations with his kids.  He is a father first and then a hero.

9)  Jim Gordon (Batman)

Commissioner Gordon has always been there for Batman. More importantly he has been there for Barbara (Daughter/Adopted Daughter/Niece- depending on continuity). He was there when she was just a Librarian. He supported her and encouraged her to be all she could be after the Joker paralyzed her. He was even a good supportive father when Barbara revealed to him that she was/is Oracle/ Batgirl.

8) Ray Ferrier (War of the Worlds- movie 2005)

Loosely based off of the 1898 book by H.G. Wells, War of the World follows a divorced father and his children. He was supposed to have the kids for the weekend but faced the devastation of an alien invasion. His focus is the survival of his family. After the aliens are gone, he manages to get his children back to their mother. He is a good father.

7) Rich Grimes (Walking Dead)

It is difficult being a father but it is multiplied by a zombie apocalypse.  Rich is a leader and an example for his son, Carl. Rich searches for a better life for him and his son during all the chaos but often it is difficult to find.  He always loves his son no matter what.

6) Geppeto (Pinocchio)

Here is a guy that desired to be a father so much that his love and desire made a wooden puppet come alive. He loving kindness and guidance eventually leads to Pinocchio becoming a real boy. He even braved the vast Ocean and took on Monstro the giant whale.

5) Jor-El (Superman)

A father discovers his planet is going to explode. He uses his resources to build a rocket to save his son. He loads the rocket with information about his homeworld and instructions how to live on this new world and how to be a hero.

4)   Arthur Weasley (Harry Potter)

Arthur is a hard working father. He doesn’t have a high and important job. He may not have much money but he does love his family and would do anything for them. During a time it would be easy to give into evil and just keep his head down for his family sake, he stands up for what is right and is a wonderful example for his family.

3) Benjamin Sisko (DS9)

Commander Sisko lost his wife in the Battle of Wolf 359. He took his son with him to Deep Space 9. This rundown old Cardassian space station was not a great place to raise a child. But Benjamin managed to run a deep space station with a stable wormhole, became the Emissary to a people, and still raise his son correctly.

2) Uncle Ben (Spiderman)

Uncle Ben may not have been Peter’s natural father but he took on the role when Peter was orphaned. Uncle Ben taught him how to live a fun life with little to no extra money. He taught Peter a love for science. Most importantly, he taught him responsibility (with and without great power).

1)  Johnathan Kent (Superman)

Johnathan Kent was the perfect father for a alien who would develop “super powers”. The hard working farmer trains the future Superman with a midwest common sense. He teaches him how to treat people and how to be a real hero.

Honorable Mention:
Johnston Green (Jericho)
Jack Carter (Eureka)
William Adama (BSG)

  1. James,

    Thanks for the comments.

Dr Quest would be a great addition. I understand that Geppeto is an an exciting pick. I included Geppeto because Fairy Tales are geeky kool. Just ask fans of Grimm and Once Upon A Time.

    1. Ah, I see you point. So Geppeto is a candidate. Nevertheless, Dr. Benton Quest is WAY geeky kooler than Geppeto, IMHO. 🙂 Great list in any case, I give you a B (90%). To increase your grade to A, of course, the list would have to include Dr. Quest! 🙂
